Djerba is a relatively large island in North Africa, located at the Tunisian coast, at the Gulf of Gabes. The island is famous for its beautiful sandy beaches, especially among the Italian and the German tourists. It is even most popular, due to the fact, that the nearby city Ajimin was used as a filming location for the first Star Wars movie in 1977. The island's climate is Mediterranean warm, the temperatures can reach up to 40 C in summer, although they are usually close to 10 C in winter or even close to zero at night. The island has an average of 30 rainy days per year. In addition to the sandy beaches and the beautiful sunrises, the island also has the largest crocodile farm in the Mediterranean region, a synagogue, a mosque, as well as the Houmt Souk market. The area is usually fairly safe, even thought in 2002 an Al Qaeda terrorist detonated a suicide bomb at the Ghriba Synagogue and killed 21 people, including 19 tourists.
